《西方翻譯理論文獻選讀》分為上下兩篇，共二十個單元，二十篇文獻。上篇為“總論”，收綜述性文獻三篇；下篇為“分論”，以年代為線索，結合思想流派，圍繞西方翻譯理論從早期的零散經驗之談上升到系統的理論，進而出現朦朧的學科意識，直至發展成為一門獨立學科的歷史進程這一核心問題，精心挑選了十七篇具有代表性的文獻。上、下兩篇分別配以導論，每個單元則除了選文之外，還編寫了選文導讀、注釋、討論題和思考題、拓展閱讀書目等內容。
