本書精選西方重要英文文本資料，運用馬克思主義唯物史觀對之進行介紹乃至解讀，力圖多層次、全方位地揭示西方在經濟、政治、軍事、思想文化、社會生活諸方面的基本狀況與特徵，從中透顯出西方歷史的演進脈絡、流變趨向乃至發展規律。書中所選的篇目，既有對某文獻的全文收錄，也有對某文獻核心部分的截取。每篇文獻後還開列了一些相關問題的研究著作，引導讀者延伸閱瀆，並作進一步的探究。
