一年生草本；花序腋生，稀頂生，雌雄花同序，雄花生於花序上部，呈穗狀，明顯短於具雌花的部分，雌花苞片1-4枚，長1厘米以上，具淺齒或圓齒。
模式種：鐵莧菜Acalypha australis L.
