所有迄今為止已知的蕭邦夜曲都已收集在此版本中。與其他體裁的作品相類似的是，作品的出版情況往往與蕭邦本人的願望有一些出入；21首夜曲中有3首是在1849年作曲家去世後才出版的。如此看來若嚴格的按年代排序的做法並不是明智之舉。也正因為這樣，這3首作品沒有被安排在年份順序中，而是單獨放置於曲集的後。
本卷遵循本版本其他卷次的編訂原則，當有多個原始材料可供參考時，儘可能以所謂一致的“原始材料層面”作為基礎。這個基礎往往能在手稿及一個與數個國家的首版之間，通過引用某些明確的標準來確立。
