蓋爾·桑德加德是銀幕上最有天賦的女演員之一。曾就讀於明尼蘇達大學，嫁給導演Herbert J. Biberman，她的丈夫來好萊塢找工作，蓋爾只好不情願跟著他。雖然她曾在舞台上工作，有著豐富經驗，但並沒有成為演員的想法。當她改變想法時，被導演茂文·勒魯瓦（Mervyn LeRoy）所發現，1936年出演《風流世家》（Anthony Adverse），被授予第一個奧斯卡獎，最佳女配角。茂文·勒魯瓦原本還想推薦讓她演《綠野仙蹤》（The Wizard of OZ）中的邪惡女巫，蓋爾拒絕了，因為她覺得不適合這個角色。然後，她與保羅·穆尼共同出演了《左拉傳》（The Life of Emile Zola），蓋爾印象最深的角色是1940年出演《香箋淚》（The Letter）中陰險奸詐、謀殺丈夫的蓓蒂·戴維絲。此後的演藝生涯繼續攀升到最高峰。如《華雷斯》（Juarez 1939），《黑貓》（The Black Cat 1941）和《安娜與暹羅王》（Anna and the King of Siam 1946）。不幸的是，20世紀50年代“紅色恐怖”歇斯底里，她被列入黑名單作證時，拒絕麥卡錫啟發的“紅色恐怖”，60年代終於回到電影圈。1983年出演《迴響》（Echoes），這是蓋爾最後一部作品，1985年因未公開的病情逝於美國加里福利亞州 Television 醫院。
