本書多年從事英語文學教學與學習的心得體會；目的在於，在對西方批評理論的分析與比較的基礎上，通過具體作品的分析，使讀者能增加對文學作品的敏感度，不再對文學作品像霧裡看花般不知所云。本書分三大部分：對自古希臘以來的西方文學批評傳統，尤其是20世紀以來一些具有影響的批評流派進行了分析與回顧；分別從傳統和現代兩個角度圍繞馬韋爾的詩歌《至羞澀情人》和莎士比亞的戲劇《哈姆雷特》進行了分析，讓學生學習如何分析文學作品；在第三部分，作者嘗試將各種理論角度綜合在一起，尤其是借鑑了一些語言學領域的研究成果，從不能角度對同一部作品進行深入分析，希望能對愛好文學的讀者朋友有一定的裨益。
