為了提高英語寫作能力，我們根據全國統一制定的《大學英語教學基本要求（試行）》、《高等學校英語專業基礎階段英語教學大綱》和《非英語專業研究生英語教學大綱》對寫作能力的教學要求，把學生英語寫作中實際存在的問題，按照內容、結構、語言套用、辭彙和技術細節等五個方面，分成三十二個專題，選出有代表性的作文作為案例，用恰當的提示引導學生對相關問題進行分析、研究和討論，再用直觀性的分析材料對學生的討論加以總結和升華，使學習者對文章結構和存在問題一目了然。每個案例根據確立的專題設有專項練習，供學習者進行比較研究，提高專項寫作技能。 根據多年的英語寫作教學經驗，我們發現案例教學法可以加快學生對於英語寫作方法的領悟，更有效地增強他們英語寫作的悟性。因此《英語寫作案例教程》按照案例教學法編寫，旨在建立師生互動型的課程，把課堂討論納入教學，利用“旁觀者清”的道理，引導學生通過比較研究他人作品來培養自己鑑別英語作文的能力，從而結束寫作者“當事者迷”的狀態。 使用《英語寫作案例教程》時，教師或學習者本人可根據各自的需要去查找和選定有關案例，深入專項研討。用作課堂教學時，教師課前可以充分備課，而學生對上課要用的案例則不得而知，可以馬上進入討論狀態，再加上專項寫作輔助練習，不用多少時間即可達到教學目的；用作自學時，學習者可根據個人的具體學習目標，針對自己的目標問題去研究案例，查閱分析性的直觀材料，結合輔助練習和練習答案，更好地提高自己的英語寫作水平。對於涉及詞語用法等複雜問題，書中配有參考書查閱指導，書末附有“部分常用名詞與動詞、形容詞的搭配”。
