《英文短篇小說閱讀》依主題分八個單元：期望與挫敗，順從與反抗，生命與死亡，單純與經驗，疏遠與交流，偏見與超越，愛情與痛苦，虛構與真實。每個單元的小說從不同的視角審視同一主題。如從女性之於男性，孩子之於成人，個人之於政府的關係考察“順從與反抗”；從女孩和男孩成長的不同視角探索“單純與經驗”。人生經驗的微妙複雜使得主題的變奏在不同作品中得以實現。有的作品反映人生的孤獨和異化；有的作品則努力嘗試愛的交流；有的作品反映偏見；有的作品超越偏見。
因收入的作品取材廣、內容新，亦為學生提供了從女性主義、（後）殖民主義和後現代主義的閱讀視角。本書使用對象為英語專業及非英語專業高年級學生，希望在幫助學生最佳化語言技能的同時，提高文學素養。
