艾氏澳洲單棘魨,為輻鰭魚綱魨形目鱗魨亞目單棘魨科的其中一,為溫帶海水魚,分布於東印度洋澳洲西部至新南威爾斯省海域,棲息深度0-360米,本魚體色微白色、灰土黃色和灰褐色或淡紅

基本介紹

沿著側邊常有四個褐色斑紋,第二背鰭與臀鰭黃色,尾鰭鰭條土黃色,其間的薄膜暗色,腹鰭不發達,背鰭硬棘2枚、背鰭軟條30-36枚、臀鰭軟條30-34枚,體長可達100厘米,成魚棲息在大陸棚大陸坡,幼魚會季節性地出現在沿海,以甲殼類海綿軟體動物魚類為食,可做為食用魚。

Distribution:Endemic to northern Australia from about Northwest Cape, Western Australia,to northern New South Wales. Juveniles inhabit inshore coastal bays and estuaries, while adults are usually found indeeper offshore waters.
Colour:Females are bright yellowish-brown, with 3-4 thin pale stripes along the sides andbright yellow fins. Males are a greyish-steely blue colur withmany numerous black blotches scattered along the lowerabdomen,bright yellow dorsla and anal fins and a bluish-grey caudal fin. Juvenileshave 4-5 brown stripes separated by light-yellow stripes along the sides.
Biology:Adults are found on the continental shelf and slope, while juveniles school seasonally in inshore waters. Juvenile ocean jackets have been caught in seagrass, over bare sand and on rocky reefs. Adults however, tend to be absent from seagrass areas. Are carnivorous, feeding mainly on salps. Other food items in the diet include gastropod mollusks, crustaceans and fish. Sold as fresh trunks .

This large leatherjacket is common on offshore reefs, and is well known for attacking hooked fish - and the occasional unwary diver.
