《老實人》是法國文學巨匠伏爾泰的著名哲理小說。主人公甘迪德是一位男爵收養的私生子，也是一位實實在在的老實人，最初他相信老師的樂觀主義哲學：在這個世界上，一切都是美好的。他愛上了男爵的女兒，結果被趕出了家門，從此四處漂泊流浪。為了尋找自己的心上人，他輾轉於多個國度，歷盡千辛萬苦，嘗遍了世態炎涼。磨難之後，他終於認識到社會的殘酷和冷漠，開始相信幸福不是天生的，而是只有通過勞動才能獲得。這部小書的文字簡單明快，如璞玉般未經雕琢，向讀者展示了一個深刻的道理：只有勞動才能抵禦戰爭時代災難、疾病的侵襲，也只有勞動才能對抗平安歲月無聊、空虛的吞噬。
