文理學院，即博雅學院，在美國被稱之為貴族學院，全美只有大約3%的學生畢業於文理學院，但文理學院對美國教育的貢獻巨大，文理學院是美國教育最引以為豪的精髓。沒有文理學院的教育，就沒有美國今天的成就。美國文理學院培養了19%的美國總統；培養了眾多普利茲獎獲得者：戲劇領域占23%、歷史領域占19%，詩歌領域占18%，傳記領域8%的，小說領域占6%（1960-1998）。美國9%的富布萊特法案基金獎獲得者來自文理學院；梅隆獎獲得者占24%。
