Absolute dating, which yields age estimates interms of years before present (yrs BP) – “present” = 1950 ‐‐ plus/minus a margin of error(e.g., 12,000 years BP, +/‐ 180 years).
Two method of absolute dating:
- 40K–40Ar (or, potassium‐argon) dating, and 40Ar‐39Ar(or, argon‐argon) dating:
The sites cannot be too young or lack of the vocanic ash sediment deposite, such as the early pioneer settlement in Atlantic Canada. - Carbon-14 dating (also known as C‐14 dating, or radiocarbon dating):
It must be carried out on organic material, and cannot be too old, such as fossils Homonid skeletal reamins.
