《簡明英國文學史》通觀目前國內書市上已有的各種英國文學史、文學選讀及文學詞典，用英文寫的簡明版英國文學史並不多見，最具代表性的要算河南大學劉炳善教授於1981年出版的那一部。劉炳善教授是業內非常受尊敬的老先生，治學嚴謹，他編寫的文學史直到今天在材料翔實、評介簡明和體例清晰方面仍然是值得稱道的。然而，畢竟二十多年過去了。隨著文學創作的發展和新文學理論的出現，國際上對文學作品和作家的研討都有了創新，加之我國改革開放後吸收了不少過去被我們忽視，甚至排斥的批評觀念和理論，這樣，編寫一部新的《簡明英國文學史》的任務就被提到了日程上來。編者在受命後，參照了過去的一些教材，擬訂了自己的編寫和選材原則。經過了近兩年的努力，編者在日常繁忙的教學和科研任務中見縫插針，終於完成了這項有意義的工作。在這部教材即將出版並投入使用之際，我們想就編寫的想法和使用方法做一些介紹，僅供讀者參考。
