《簡明英國文學史》通觀目前國內書市上已有的各種英國文學史、文學選讀及文學詞典,用英文寫的簡明版英國文學史並不多見,最具代表性的要算河南大學劉炳善教授於1981年出版的那一部。劉炳善教授是業內非常受尊敬的老先生,治學嚴謹,他編寫的文學史直到今天在材料翔實、評介簡明和體例清晰方面仍然是值得稱道的。然而,畢竟二十多年過去了。隨著文學創作的發展和新文學理論的出現,國際上對文學作品和作家的研討都有了創新,加之我國改革開放後吸收了不少過去被我們忽視,甚至排斥的批評觀念和理論,這樣,編寫一部新的《簡明英國文學史》的任務就被提到了日程上來。編者在受命後,參照了過去的一些教材,擬訂了自己的編寫和選材原則。經過了近兩年的努力,編者在日常繁忙的教學和科研任務中見縫插針,終於完成了這項有意義的工作。在這部教材即將出版並投入使用之際,我們想就編寫的想法和使用方法做一些介紹,僅供讀者參考。
