《神曲》是但丁1307年至1321在放逐期間寫的一部長詩。全詩分為三部《地獄篇》（已經收錄並出版在“最經典英語文庫”第一輯里）、《煉獄篇》、《天堂篇》。每部33首，最前面增加一首序詩，共100首，描繪了詩人但丁在維吉爾和貝阿特麗采的指引下，幻游地獄、煉獄、天堂三界的故事。

從古希臘、古羅馬文學開始，一直到20世紀漫長的西方文學史中，中世紀的教會文學、騎士文學、英雄史詩等都是不可或缺的一部分。而中世紀文學，更是由於有了但丁《神曲》這部劃時代的重磅作品而增色許多。正如恩格斯所說，但丁是“中世紀最後一位詩人，同時又是新時代的最初一位詩人”。
