作為高爐煉鐵的熱源,碳在高爐內,與鼓風中的氧和礦石中被還原氧化物的氧反應,放出熱量是高爐熱平衡中熱量的主要收入項。反應同時形成CO和CO2兩種化合物,當形成CO時,每千克碳放出的熱量為9800kJ,而形成CO2時放出的熱量為33400kJ。碳素利用係數的計算式為:
