他1879年他出生在賓夕法尼亞州的列丁城，就學於哈佛大學(1897—1900)和紐約法律學校。1904年取得律師資格後，在紐約開業，1909年婚，1916年加入了哈特福德(康乃狄克州)保險公司的律師團。1934年他成為該公司的副總經理，餘生一直在哈特福德度過，於1955年逝世。 華萊士在業餘時間搞詩歌創作，他的同事和妻子都不很了解他在詩歌界的重要地位，但他一直堅持創作。其主要作品有《簧風琴》、《荒原》、《關於秩序的思想》、《貓頭鷹的三葉草》、《帶藍色吉他的人及其他》《必要的天使》。
