全書共分為八個部分(PART),每個部分含若干個單元(Unit),共42個單元。每個單元由一篇課文和一篇閱讀材料組成,總計84篇。其中第一部分(1~4單元)介紹環境、環境科學與工程概述和歷史;第二部分(5~11單元)介紹大氣化學和空氣污染及其防治;第三部分(12~19單元)介紹水污染來源種類、水化學、各種污水處理技術、處理單元設備等;第四部分(20~23單元)為固體廢物及處理方法;第五部分(24~27單元)介紹噪聲污染與控制、全球氣候變化、土壤污染與腐蝕、熱污染等其他污染及控制技術;第六部分(28~35單元)為環境管理與政策,包括介紹環境影響及其評價、環境監控和分析及採樣程式、環境政策與策略、環境風險評價、毒素和食品安全;第七部分(36~38單元)為生態系統與生態群落,介紹環境生物與生態圈,環境生態學,生態與生命系統與生物多樣性等;第八部分(39~42單元)介紹環境可持續發展,綠色化學與技術,清潔生產,清潔生產工藝及其綠色化學過程。每篇課文均配有與課文相對應的練習,主要以主觀練習題為主,包括閱讀與辭彙練習,英譯漢與漢譯英,用英語回答問題及寫出課文或某一段落的小結(summary)等。為便於學生自學,本書每課配有單詞和詞組表,並對課文的難點作必要的注釋,全書最後附有總辭彙表。
本書根據《大學英語教學大綱》(理工科本科用)專業閱讀部分的要求編寫,是高等學校環境科學、環境工程或相關專業的教材,也可供同等英語程度環境科學工作者及環境工程師或相關領域的科技人員使用。
