牡丹江“星是由原中山大學的葉泉志與台灣國立中央大學鹿林天文台台長林宏欽合作發現的,發現於2007年6月24日,發現當晚是由鹿林天文台台長林宏欽操作41厘米R-C式反射鏡,葉泉志同好處理圖像數據後發現了該小行星,並及時上報給了國際小行星中心,最終獲得臨時編號2007 MV20,經過更多的數據補充確認後,獲得永久編號與命名權。 經王彬提議,於2013年3月提交了命名申請,7月22日,國際小行星中心發布的MPC 84383號公報上公布了第278384號小行星被正式命名為“牡丹江”星的公告。 “牡丹江”星屬於主帶小行星,直徑約為2公里,繞太陽一周需要4.49個地球年。目前(2013年7月29日)它正在雙子座天區運行,距離地球約3.8個天文單位,亮度約22等。在沖日前後亮度能達到19等左右,但仍需要用大型望遠鏡才能拍攝到。

Mudanjiang is a city in the northernmost Heilongjiang Province in China. The name comes from "Mudan ula" (literally "curving river" in Manchu), which was originally the name of the river that flows through the city. Name suggested by B. Wang. [Ref:Minor Planet Circ.84383]
