劇情
一群菁英科學家在設備精良的海底研究中心，進行創世紀的醫學研究，沒想到他們卻改變了自然生態，讓一群惡鯊的聰明敏捷。這些隱藏在平靜海面下的殺手，正蓄勢待發，以報復人類為樂趣……
生化製藥廠的老闆法蘭克林（山繆傑克森飾），是海底研究中心的贊助金主。他提供龐大資金讓蘇珊麥博士（莎佛朗布洛絲飾）研究抗老年疑呆症的神奇藥丸。麥博士與他的研究小組在孤立海中的海底研究中心，以最古老的生物--鯊魚為實驗對象，取其腦中蛋白質，注入人類壞死腦細胞，以完成偉大的醫學成就。但法蘭克林因為投資失利，預備終結研究中心的經費贊助，這對於成功在望的麥博士而言不啻是一個重大的打擊。在努力說服下，法蘭克林只好要求儘速看到成果，並且前來研究室目睹他們的成就。這時候暴風雨也正在緩緩的向海底研究中心逼近。為達到目的，麥博士早已加大鯊魚的腦容量，以萃取更多腦蛋白，但同時鯊魚也逐漸變的聰明，並且越來越強壯。但這不為人知的改變只有麥博士和鯊魚朝夕相處的潛水夫卡特（湯瑪斯傑恩飾）察覺。

劇照雖然卡特曾向鞏蘇珊麥提出警語，但蘇珊麥為使得實驗正常進行，置之不理。終於，在最後一次的成功實驗中，向人類展開致命的報復，求援有直升機在風雨中趕到，卻也不幸被聰明的巨鯊襲擊，一場不可避免的大災難於是展開。他們該如何對抗自己創造出來的變種惡鯊，誰又能從這險境中死裡逃生？！

本片因為拍攝難度巨大，電腦特技複雜而足足準備了四年的時間。拍攝地點就在當年拍攝《鐵達尼號》的水下攝影棚，片中大部分鯊魚鏡頭都是真鯊魚，而且大多數演員都受過專業潛水訓練，全靠動作片名導Renny Harlin使這一切得以實現，並力圖超越25年前的巨作《大白鯊》。
