本教材縮編自M.F.Spotts,T.E.Shoupand L.E.Hornberger編寫的《Design of Machine Elements》(8fhEdition)。該書內容豐富,大部分內容適合我國機械類本科生的教學要求。原教材共15章,不僅包括典型機械零部件的設計方法,而且還包括工程力學、工程材料、形狀綜合原理和塑膠零件的設計等內容。為和我國目前高校機械基礎課程體系中機械設計課程的內容相銜接,以便於各類讀者使用,編者對教材進行了重新組織和縮編。現包括9章內容,包括機械設計概論、基本應力分析和失效理論、軸的設計、彈簧、螺栓連線和螺旋傳動、帶傳動、離合器、制動器和鏈傳動、潤滑、滾動軸承、直齒圓柱齒輪、斜齒輪、錐齒輪和蝸桿傳動。從刪減的內容看,其內容或是與我們的課程關係不大,或是在其他課程里已經學過。對於原書中豐富的習題,根據保留的基本內容進行了相應的刪減。另外,原教材為讀者提供了一些基本的工程力學計算、典型零部件的設計程式。為與紙質教材相關內容相一致,沒有改變原程式中的模組編號。
