杜鵑座 47是在1751年被Nicolas Louis de Lacaille發現的，因為位置偏南，所以在此之前歐洲的觀測者一直未看見這個大小如同滿月的星團，並且有非常亮和密集的核心，已知有22顆毫秒脈衝星存在其中，和至少有21顆藍掉隊星在靠近核心之處。
杜鵑座 47也被派屈克·穆爾收錄在考德威爾目錄中，名稱為C106。在我們銀河系中有 200多個球狀星團繞著銀河中心運轉。NGC 104（也稱杜鵑座47）是全天星座中第二亮的球狀星團 (僅次於半人馬座的 Omega星團,Omega Centauri)。位於小麥哲倫星雲的旁邊，只有在南半球才可以看到它。

這個集群是距離我們大約15000光年遠,包含數以百萬計的恆星、和一些不尋常的外來星。 兩個小星群非常接近我們銀河系的星系。
來自ESO官方網站原文：This bright cluster of stars is 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), shown here in an image taken by ESO’s VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) from the Paranal Observatory in Chile. This cluster is located around 15 000 light-years away from us and contains millions of stars, some of which are unusual and exotic. This image was taken as part of the VISTA Magellanic Cloud survey, a project that is scanning the region of the Magellanic Clouds, two small galaxies that are very close to our Milky Way.—《The globular star cluster 47 Tucanae》
