研究員,男,博士生導師(中科院植物研究所)。師從徐仁院士,長期從事植物演化和環境變遷方面的科學研究和科學教育。1987年獲德國洪堡獎學金,1990年獲國務院學位辦“做出突出貢獻的中國博士學位獲得者”榮譽稱號,1992年起享受政府特殊津貼。主持中國科學院“九五”重大項目,國家自然科學面上基金和重點基金多項,獲中國科學院自然科學二等獎、國家自然科學三等獎和北京市科學技術二等獎。發表研究論文150多篇,與英、美、法、德、比、波、捷、印和俄羅斯等十多個國家具有長期穩定的合作關係。
曾任中國科學院植物研究所常務副所長,北京自然博物館館長等職位。中國植物學會古植物分會名譽理事長,中國植物學、英國林奈學會,美國植物學會,國際分類學會,烏克蘭古生物學會會員等。
