本書本著承前啟後、由淺入深、循序漸進的原則，與高中普通學生所學英語知識緊密銜接，起點較低，容易閱讀，非常適合普通高校一年級學生的入學水平。全書的選文題材廣、文體寬、風格異、內容精、文字美，並且結構嚴謹，兼顧一定的趣味性。為了解決學生辭彙量少、閱讀速度慢的難題，每篇文章之後還注出生詞和詞組，且有注音；對一些難詞難句加了註解，並將平時提及較少的人名、地名列在注釋中，有些還加注了文化背景知識，對引導學生擴大知識面有一定啟迪和裨益。
