歌曲背景
此歌曲是包美聖同村好友侯德健（兒時兩人雖在同一所幼稚園上學，但相互並不認識）所創作的第一首歌曲，侯德健從沒受過任何正統音樂教育，稀里糊塗不費吹灰之力就寫出了這首歌。第一版“小牛的哥哥”本來是“小毛的哥哥”，台灣當局送審沒通過，於是隨便改成了“小牛的哥哥”稀里糊塗就通過了。這首歌童趣盎然，是侯德健為數不多的鄉土民謠風格的作品。
在一次演唱會上，侯德健和包美聖先後唱了這首《捉泥鰍》，味道很不同，一個真是大哥哥的樣子，一個是央求大哥哥帶著去捉泥鰍的小妹妹。後來，新格唱片打算為時年二十歲左右的包美聖出版第一張個人專輯《包美聖之歌》， 當為《捉泥鰍》錄音時，包美聖忍不住哭了。不是因為被這首歌感動，而是因為太像兒歌，讓她感覺很沒面子。在製作人的軟硬兼施下，她成為該曲的首唱，意想不到地廣受歡迎。借緣民歌，包美聖與同村的侯德健也成為好友。
《捉泥鰍》這首兒歌當年在台灣極為走紅，並跨越淺淺的海峽成為大陸很多人兒時的記憶，不管大人或是小孩都能哼唱兩句。後來，卓依婷等歌手的翻唱，更是助長了這首歌謠傳播的翅膀，也延續了這首兒歌的生命。
原唱簡介
包美聖，1958年出生於台灣，70年代最具代表性的民歌手之一。台大歷史系畢業，是第一屆金韻獎的優勝歌手。包美聖的音色清亮而帶童趣，在眾多民歌手之中，辨識度極高，也因為其聲音的獨特性，在民歌鼎盛之時，極受聽眾的喜愛。一共出版了《包美聖之歌－你在日落深處等我》、《長空下的獨白》、《那一盆火》及《樵歌》等四張專輯。 包美聖是聲音識別度最高的民歌手，她的歌聲非常獨特，旁人無法效仿，更與學院派的經典唱法無關。
