這是神話原型批評的巔峰之作。20世紀50年代，加拿大學者弗萊(NorthropFrye)從文化和文學角度對“原型”作進一步深入闡釋，發展出一套更加系統完整的原型理論。在書中，他揭示了文學對應於神話的內在結構，試圖給予文學批評以獨立的地位，使文學批評具有方法論原則和自然科學的連貫性，並多層面地研究了西方文學的原型圖式結構。
