本書包括以下內容：
一、Language Points，即課文中出現的語言難點和要點注釋：
1.難點講解；
2.重點語法項目講解的補充和擴充；
3.常用詞用法舉例，以動詞為主，每課選詞6到7個，配以例句和用法說明，使學習者能逐步熟悉和掌握常用動詞的句型和搭配。
以上講解項目均按語言點在課文中出現的先後順序排列；有些重要、常用的語言點在不同的課文中多次出現，注釋中也會重複提及，並註明參看某課某條注釋，我們希望這一做法有助於自學者對舊課的複習鞏固。
二、Key，即練習參考答案和講解：
這一部分包括課文練習（Exercises）全部項目和口筆語活動（Activities）中翻譯項日的練習參考答案。有些練習（特別是翻譯練習）可以有不止一種答案，本書一般只提供一種答案。此外，對課文練習中的第1、2項和句子漢譯英還作一些講解：對第1項（根據保文內容判斷下列各句的正誤）主要是引述課文中的相關句子供對照理解；對第2項（從課文中選出與下列各句意思相當的句子）主要是對兩個句子中的一些關鍵字和短語提供英語解釋供對照理解，必要時適當用漢語作一些解說；對句子漢譯英練習是指出所用句型和一些生詞、短語，有時也提及時態、語態或語氣。
三、Reading Material，即補充閱讀材料：
業餘學習者的起點不同，水平不一，能用於學習的時間長短也各不相同。考慮到課本的課文主要是供精讀用的，對一些基礎較好、時間較充裕的學習者，還需要有一些閱讀材料作泛讀之用，以提高閱讀理解能力，因此本書在每課後附兩篇補充閱讀材料，供學有餘力的讀者使用，以省去他們另找材料的麻煩。所選材料內容多與課文所涉及的文化背景知識有關；其中一篇的練習為問答，一篇為多項選擇；多項選擇練習的參考答案附在書末。
