學習語言最重要的就是會用，而在英語學習過程中，如何有效地提高聽力技能，使自己能比較輕鬆地聽懂外台新聞，往往是困擾英語學習者的一大難題。全書分為初級、中級和高級三個部分。初級部分所收錄的二十三課內容均出自美國之音特別新聞報導，內容涉及日常生活、健康、教育、金融、政治、軍事等，題材廣泛；中級部分有二十八課，均為標準語速的新聞報導，內容涉及政治時事、經濟、體育、軍事等；高級部分共十五課，前十課為各國政要的演講，後五課為綜合新聞。通過這種簡明務實的方式，能夠幫助學習者有效提高英語新聞聽力水平。
