埃德加·愛倫·坡（Edgar Allan Poe ,1809——1849），生於波士頓，父母都是流浪藝人，後被弗尼吉亞富商愛倫夫婦收養。坡生性敏感，行為放誕，雖先後進入弗尼吉亞大學和西點軍校，但都未能完成學業。養父幾經努力，最後於他斷絕了關係。坡後來生活在貧困中，直到在一家平民醫院病逝。作為現代主義詩歌的先驅，坡注意運用象徵、暗示的手法，追求詩的形式美，公開宣稱“為詩而詩”，並著力表現憂鬱、絕望、頹廢和悲劇的人生。
