國際藝術、設計與媒體院校聯盟於1990年由赫爾辛基藝術與設計大學、倫敦皇家藝術學院與丹麥設計大學、格利特·里特維特學院、艾森綜合大學和維也納套用藝術大學發起成立。2001年開始以協會形式運作。截至2013年共有來自世界48個國家的198個頂尖藝術、設計與媒體院校成員。
Cumulus全稱是the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media。是被聯合國教科文組織正式確認的全球唯一的藝術、設計與媒體院校國際組織，由歐洲和世界上其他國家和地區有重要影響的設計院校組成，其宗旨是為高水平的設計藝術和設計教育提供交流與合作的平台。
國際設計藝術院校聯盟擁有嚴格的入會標準，需至少由兩家現有會員單位推薦，並且同一個國家的會員數不準超過總會員數的10%。

歐洲設計藝術院校聯盟於1990年由赫爾辛基藝術與設計大學、倫敦皇家藝術學院與丹麥設計大學、格利特·里特維特學院、艾森綜合大學和維也納套用藝術大學發起成立。該聯盟的目的是：舉辦充滿活力和靈活多樣的論壇，促進歐洲地區和世界各地區藝術和設計領域高水平教育機構的合作與交流。

歷史發展
在2006年法國南特召開的聯盟會議上，當時的“歐洲設計藝術院校聯盟”正式更名為“國際設計藝術院校聯盟”。中央美術學院的肖勇教授當選為聯盟執行委員會委員。2017年5月30日至6月2日，在丹麥科靈舉辦的國際設計藝術院校聯盟會議上，北京工業大學耿丹學院國際設計學院成為新會員。目前該聯盟會員覆蓋五大洲，有來自47個國家的251所院校。
