喬治·羅伯特·格雷

喬治·羅伯特·格雷（英語：George Robert Gray，1808年7月8日—1872年5月6日）是一名英國的動物學家及作家，出任了大英博物館的鳥類部分主管近41年，並且是倫敦皇家昆蟲學會的先導者。其最重要的著作《Genera of Birds》（1844-1849年）給出了近46000條參考資料。其兄長約翰·愛德華·格雷同為重要的生物學家。

人物簡介

喬治·羅伯特·格雷出生於倫敦小切爾西區(Little Chelsea)，父親塞繆爾·弗里德里克·格雷是博物學家和藥理學家，母親伊莉莎白娘家姓福費特(Forfeit)。他在泰勒商業學校(Merchant Taylor's School)接受教育。格雷於1831年開始在大英博物館擔任動物學分部助理管理員。

他首先對昆蟲進行編目，並出版了《澳大利亞昆蟲學》（1833年），並為喬治·居維葉的《動物王國》英文版貢獻了昆蟲學部分。格雷描述了許多鱗翅目物種。1833年，他成為倫敦皇家昆蟲學會的創始人。

格雷對蒼眉蝗鶯的最初描述出現於1860年，該鳥（英文名：Gray's Grasshopper Warbler）以他的名字命名。該標本由阿爾弗雷德·拉塞爾·華萊士在摩鹿加群島採集。在一本關於格雷在相位方面工作的簡短傳記中，布拉格(Bragg)認為格雷通過三篇出版物（1833年、1835年和1843年）中使被命名的相類物種數量增加了一倍多；隨後，三種竹節蟲以格雷的名字命名。
