向福元，湘潭大學教授，博士生導師。碩士畢業於中國科學院雲南天文台天體物理專業；博士畢業於湘潭大學凝聚態物理專業;1998年在中國科學技術大學近代物理系訪問，從事磁流體理論的學習與研究工作；1999在中國科學院雲南天文台做高級訪問學者，參加晚型食雙星活動及演化的研究工作；2004年獲湖南省自然科學優秀論文一等獎；發表學術論文46篇,被SCI收錄42篇。多年來連續承擔國家自然科學基金面上項目、重點項目等。

1998年在中國科學技術大學近代物理系訪問，從事磁流體理論的學習與研究工作並參加了國家自然科學基金項目 “雙流體激波結構”的研究工作；1999在中國科學院雲南天文台做高級訪問學者，參與國家自然科學基金項目 “晚型食雙星活動及演化”的研究工作； 2001年獲湘潭大學教學成果二等獎，2002年在湘潭大學在職博士研究生，2004年獲湖南省自然科學優秀論文一等獎；2006年12月至2007年12月在美國密蘇里-哥侖比亞大學訪問；
在國內外學術刊物發表論文46篇, 被SCI收錄42篇,其中有8篇發表在Astronomy Journal(SCI影響因子5.647)、Monthly Notices of Royal Astronomical Society(SCI影響因子4.993)、New Astronomy(SCI影響因子3.866)、Astronomical & Astrophysics(SCI影響因子3.843)等四種國際著名刊物上。2011湘潭大學向福元主持承擔的重點項目“恆星磁活動現象和磁活動機理研究”（08A072）發表SCI論文7篇，其中1篇影響因子為7.36，5篇影響因子為5.02。
