史蒂芬.佩特克夫的研究側重於生物學哲學和一般意義上的哲學科學。他寫了大量關於科學解釋的文章。他表示支持作為一個公共解釋框架的在以非規律為基礎的學科中，比如演化論和生態學中的非統一模型。他目前的研究重點是科學中的矛盾並且從次協調的邏輯出發關注套用模型，從而分析演化研究綱領的過程。
