2011年，在芝加哥大學北京中心召開了“第二屆古代墓葬美術研究國際學術討論會”。這次會議由芝加哥大學東亞藝術研究中心、中央美術學院人文學院與北京大學視覺與圖像研究中心三家主辦，由芝加哥大學北京中心與湖南美術出版社協辦。作為一系列“雙年會議”中的第二場，這次會議的一個主要目的是為中外學者建構一個學術平台，圍繞著“墓葬美術”這一主題進行持續的交流和討論。這次會議對“墓葬美術”的概念也做了廣義的界定，不僅包括墓葬出土的藝術品，而且涵蓋了墓葬的整體設計、墓葬中不同視覺和物質形式的配置、墓葬所反映的禮儀、宗教和文化因素以及墓葬的發現和研究史。而本書正是這次會議一個總結和成果。
