王建國是東南大學1978屆本科生，1985年免試攻讀我的博士生。他學習刻苦努力、善於分析，先後跟我參加過河南博物院設計和冰心文學館的建築設計，此二項作品均得到好評並先後獲得大獎。此外，他還參加和主持了常熟市政府人大和政協樓的設計，表現出相當的設計水平。
城市設計是城市規劃的重要組成部分，是城市建設的重要環節，對城市建設起到指導和控制作用。
1985年，在王建國讀齊康的博士生期間，我將他的研究方向定位於城市設計，他的博士論文的題目為《現代城市設計理論和方法研究》，後不斷完善，出版了《現代城市設計理論和方法》和《城市設計》並被不少高校選用作為教材，十餘次重印而且還獲得出版方面的圖書獎。《傳承與探新（王建國城市和建築設計研究成果選）》就是他的另一個研究成果。
城市設計是城市規劃的重要組成部分，是城市建設的重要環節，對城市建設起到指導和控制作用。
