The Connotation of the Primary Stage of Socialism
Socialism with Chinese characteristics is the socialism at the primary stage.In other words, soaalism with Chinese characteristics is at the primary stage ofsocialism.Two facts can be inferred from this statement: fact one, it cannot be derued that Cluna is now in a socialist soaety; fact two, China is now at the primary stage, or, the underdeveloped stage.We must face tlus squarely instead ofjumping over this primary stage.These two facts are the conditions and the greatest realities in contemporary China.Therefore, these two facts can be regarded as the two connotations of the primary stage of soaalism.
The primary stage of socialism is not the initial phase in a general sense, a phase that every country goes through in the process of building socialism.Rather it is, in a particular sense, the specific stage China must necessarily go through while building socialism under conditions ofbackward productive forces and an underdeveloped commodity economy.
We can learn from the connotations of the primary stage of socialism that a correct understanding of the present historical stage of Chinese society is of prime importance for building socialism with Chinese characteristics, and it is the essential basis on which to formulate and implement a correct line and correct poliaes.
