《京師讀本:高中英語讀本(必修5)》選文中出現的較難理解的單詞或句式不在文章中加注，而作為“旁批”列出來，從而實現無障礙閱讀。這些旁批包括辭彙詞義注釋、複雜語句解釋、背景知識補充、文化知識補充和值得模仿和背誦的語句摘錄等。針對所選文章設計若干個習題，題型多樣，除了傳統的測試學生對該短文的大意、主題、細節、闡述方式、猜測詞義等的理解的四選一這種客觀題型，還有訓練學生閱讀技巧和表達能力的題型。讀寫不分家，我們可以通過這些練習來培養學生的語言輸出（如撰寫文章提綱和大意）能力。
