本書通過翻譯、闡釋四個可讀性極強、在中國文壇產生過轟動效應的當代中國文學作品，提出了中英翻譯應從狹義的語際轉換到廣義的文化定位、從不同側面、在不同層次上採用“跨文化譯釋”方法的新觀點，且相應提出在翻譯過程中應強調整體策略意識並據此對具體翻譯方法作適當調整。書中不僅對中西方主要翻譯理論思想進行了追本溯源、全方位的梳理和簡述並有所創新，而且理論聯繫實際，結合有代表性的作品，套用作者的立論，對所選文本作了深入的個案剖析和文化譯釋，對中譯英過程中社會、歷史、文化等多方面原因引發的溝通障礙作了多層次、多方位的論述；而這一實踐過程又反過來有力地證實了本書立論的科學性、針對性和實用性。
