本書涵蓋了中國和美國兩個國家的常見文化知識和風俗常識，分為“地理”、“教育”、“飲食和餐桌禮儀”、“節日”、“婚俗”、“文學”、“醫藥”、“繪畫藝術”、“建築”、“電影”和“體育”十二個章節。每個章節不但有整體的文化知識簡介，而且從某一個文化現象作為切入點，詳細介紹相關的風俗常識；並在每一章里列舉了相關的延伸閱讀課文作為補充，以便加深學生對文化常識的了解和掌握；而且每一章還包括跨文化交際思辨問題若干，引導學生對比分析不同文化現象，提高了學生對文化差異的敏感性和寬容性。
