蒐集、整理、彙編古文獻，雖不是創造性的文化建設工作，但對文化保存、傳布所作出的貢獻是很大的，可以說不下於，有時甚至有過於創作者。 《漢書·地理志》和《水經注》是兩種具有重大價值的中國古代地理名著，中國文化寶庫中能擁有這兩部名著，當然得歸功於班固和酈道元，但班、酈二人的貢獻，主要不在於二人自己的撰述，而在於他們把許多有價值的原始地理著作搜羅彙編在一起，從而使這些寶貴資料不至於散佚失傳，得以傳諸後世以至於今，要是沒有班、酈，這么許多價值很高而篇幅短小的原始作品，就不可能流傳下來。
