藜科是被子植物的大科之一，兩半球的亞熱帶、溫帶、寒帶都有分布。藜科基本上是一個溫帶科，全球共約130個屬1500餘種，廣泛分布於歐亞大陸、南北美洲、非洲和大洋洲的半乾旱及鹽鹼地區。主要生長在海拔300～2000m之間的地段，個別種類如小果濱藜可分布在海拔4000m以上的高山，該植物在青藏高原高的分布記錄為5050m。
