專輯介紹
"Bully Defense Mechanism" is Sonic Roach Destruction Unit's fourth studio release. Eclectic songs swagger on this release creating layers of sonic disonance interspersed with harmonic power pop. The disc opens with Wicca chant ("Chantro") and launches into the Joy Division-esque opus "Where are the Wiccans?". Ominous vocals crescendo and meld with buzzing guitar noise to create an ironic stream of desperation. Next up is straight ahead rocker "The Man" with guest guitarist TJ Hecker. Lou Reed influenced chord structures permeate this uptempo journey through a poolhall hustle. "Dopmanine" is a punk-pop anthem reminiscent of late 70's Akron OH bands. On "Flat", the band once again visits the familiar terrain of outsider band fingering the area's cliquish alternative musical scene. "I Concede" is a remake of an earlier SRDU song appearing on Opus Roachus Maximus. This version is punchier, edgier and more in the spirit of the original demo version. "The Deeds of Fertile Jim" - hat's off to Tobin Sprout. Second cover - "Winnebago Skeletons" highlights Dave's favorite Handsome Family number. "Posed" puts the "dys" back into family dysfunction. The disc ends with second sonic bookend - the poppish "Driftwood Antichrist" which de-evolves into a controlled wall of psychedelic sound. Sonic Roach Destruction Unit has been creating inventive alternative pop since 1997. They have been influenced musically by; The Soft Boys, Talking Heads, Television, Peter Gabriel, and the Velvet Underground. SRDU consists of a power trio of Columbus (OH) rock veterans - Dave LaRosa, Jim LaRosa and Doug Leed. Dave and Jim have played in; The Sockets, The Craniums, Joe College and the Surfs Up Boys, and He & Me. Doug has been played with; Lack of Motivation, The Oopsy Daisies, Margarine, Slow News Day and Jaykus. SRDU’s first CD, “Dead Man’s Answering Machine”, combined intelligent social critique with bombastic rhythms and unique guitar work. “This oddly monikered trio is more interested in what Bob Mould once called that loud guitar (approach) to changing the world (The Columbus Alive, September 1999)”. Guest performers added mandolin, fiddle and acoustic guitar to help give the disc a distinctly Midwestern timbre. In April 2003 their song “Buckle Up” from this CD was featured on the internationally syndicated “Car Talk” radio show. Their second CD “Opus Roachus Maximus” showed a moodier and darker side of SRDU. The band’s power was broadened with longer song arrangements creating an intoxicating and psychedelic musical journey. Midwestbands.com stated; “I would recommend that you hear the music of Sonic Roach Destruction Unit; be prepared, though. It isn’t feel-good music that you’ll enjoy while sipping your favorite beverage in your office or living room. It is very raw, with good guitar work, and creative lyrics that deserve a close listen”. SRDU’s third studio CD, “Freedom’s Marching Backwards” reflected the creative political humor of the band as well as the intelligence of their music. It moved away from guitar oriented rock towards more harmonic arrangements, keyboards, caustic lyrical content, and tighter song structures. Stephen Slaybaugh of the Columbus Alive describes the music as; “matching vaguely humorous and pointed commentary to a disjointed din of buzzing guitars, keyboard whine and snappy rhythms. The band’s sound is distinctly Midwestern, often recalling the Great Plains and consisting of part pop and part lo-fi punk“. Check out the new CD "Bully Defense Mechanism" - it will keep you safe and dominant for weeks.
