One night Max puts on his wolf suit and makes mischief of one kind and another, so his mother calls him 'Wild Thing' and sends him to bed without his supper. That night a forest begins to grow in Max's room and an ocean rushes by with a boat to take Max to the place where the wild things are. Max tames the wild things and crowns himself as their king, and then the wild rumpus begins. But when Max has sent the monsters to bed, and everything is quiet, he starts to feel lonely and realises it is time to sail home to the place where someone loves him best of all. 作者簡介
桑達克於1964年以《野獸國》一書獲凱迪克金獎；1970年獲安徒生插畫獎；為表彰他的整體創作，1983年美國圖書館協會頒發其羅蘭英格斯懷爾德獎；1996年獲美國國家榮譽藝術獎章；2003年榮獲國際林格倫兒童文學獎。
莫里斯桑達克的作品包括《野獸國》《廚房之夜狂想曲》《在那遙遠的地方》（這三部作品並稱為桑達克最著名的圖畫書三部曲。）《肯尼的窗子》《羅絲房門上的記號》《堅果圖書館》（包括《雞湯加米飯》《鱷魚之家字母書》《約翰尼的數數書》以及《皮埃爾》），《亂七八糟，吧嗒》《親愛的小莉》《我和傑克、蓋伊都很沮喪》《糊塗的阿爾蒂》以及他最後的作品《致我的兄弟》等。
他為美國作家赫爾曼梅爾維爾和德國作家亨利希馮克萊斯特的作品畫過插圖。他把關於寫書和插畫的兒童文學隨筆，收集在《凱迪克獎與公司：書籍圖片注》（1988年）一書中。
