內容簡介
Domestic violence, poverty, homelessness, welfare and no education are just a few of the indicators of being in the grasp of the family concept of addiction. Such were the circumstances I would encounter and pay consequences long before ever touching a drug myself. At age 49 my dad would succumb to his addiction and lose his life for it. My older brother at age 60 would succumb to liver disease a direct result of drinking and drugging himself to death. My mom, more fortunate, would only suffer the barrage of psychiatric institutions, suicide attempts, padded rooms, strait jackets and last but not least shock treatments and many of them, she died 22 years clean. When I took my first shot of heroin believe me I needed it. And what began as my friend swiftly and with great rage became a ravenous predator. And for 13 years I medicated myself against the demons of addiction, whether mine or my families didn't matter, I was dying one way or the other. Hepatitis, homelessness and facing life in prison is what brought me to my knees, the war was over and I lost. November 8 of 1977 was the last time I used drugs and "we can be heroes" will tell you how that happened. This is a story for mother's fathers and siblings of the addict as well as the addict himself. This is a story that, without sponsorship and mentors, would never have been written.
