But we are not likely to understand the role of the military in post independence Africa unless we also study that of the military in pre-colonial and colonial Africa. And it is imperative that the different aspects of welfare in Africa should be given serious attention if current myths about pre-colonial Africa are to be exploded. The reprinting of "War and Society in Africa" provides a timely opportunity for scholars to investigate some early academic study of welfare and militarization in African society. Even at the time of its first printing, the focus on pre-colonial welfare challenged the then fashionable view that African politics could be largely explained through a paradigm of economic underdevelopment derived from the western colonial impact, and many of the questions raised in the earlier volume have now resurfaced in a new and pertinent form. With new perspectives such as these, this volume is an important early guide to the nature and evolution of Africanist debate on war and its place in African social development.
