這首歌的標題來自於Jon所欽佩的老西部英雄，以及他如何把他們與自己所憎惡的區分開來（希望死或活著）。在演員工作室的一次採訪中，Jon說，他在一個已經睡不著覺的早晨，得到了歌曲的靈感。每一支搖滾樂隊的生活作風都和不法之徒相似，"a young band of thieves, riding into town, stealing the money, the girls, and the booze before the sun came up."

Jon Bon Jovi在2008年2月20日在密西根州底特律的演唱會時說，這首歌絕對是受Bob Seger的"Turn the Page"的影響。邦喬維2010年7月21日安大略省（加拿大）多倫多的演唱會上演唱了"Turn the Page"。隨後，Jon告訴聽眾，他記得聽這首歌是在1985年和Richie Sambora在中西部坐在旅遊巴士車中旅行時，並告訴Richie Sambora，我們要寫這樣風格的一首歌。一年後兩人完成了“Wanted Dead or Alive”。
