《Thinking Out Loud》由希蘭本人和艾米·維奇晚餐後在希蘭家的一張長沙發上完成創作。艾德·希蘭表示，歌曲的另一位曲作者艾米·維奇是在他的專輯《X》接近完工時找到他的。艾米詢問他能否收錄一首由她創作的歌曲在專輯的豪華版中，這樣她便能得到一些錢去償還她的按揭貸款。於是二人便寫下了這首歌曲。他同時表示，這首歌曲的創作靈感來源於他的女友Athina Andrelos。
