一九六三年出生於西班牙。幼時曾隨身為外交官員的父母旅居哥斯大黎加、法國、墨西哥、加拿大，成年後作客伊朗、土耳其及印度。畢業於加拿大特倫特大學哲學系，其後從事過植樹工、洗碗工、保全等職業。李安稱讚揚•馬特爾“使得東西方文明以兼容並蓄的方式存在於 文字中”。
