以人類的智慧創造出堪與人類大腦相平行的機器腦（人工智慧），對人類來說是一個極具誘惑的領域，人類為了實現這一夢想也已經奮鬥了很多個年頭了。而從一個語言研究者的角度來看，要讓機器與人之間自由交流那是相當困難的，甚至可以說可能會是一個永無答案的問題。人類的語言，人類的智慧型是如此的複雜，以至於我們現在的研究可能還並未觸及其導向本質的外延部分的邊沿。

紐約的慈善家Hugh Loebner組織了首次正式的圖靈測試。從1991年起，每年舉行一次這樣的競賽，其中反應與人類的反應最難區別的計算機將獲得100000美元的獎金和一塊金牌。
迄今為止，獎牌爭奪戰仍在進行中。此外，每年還會給予相對來說最像人類的計算機2000美元的獎金和一塊銅牌。
對於熱衷人工智慧的人來說，羅布納獎(Loebner prize)的比賽已經成了每年重要的賽事。
