Kevin Michael (b.1985 in Chester, Pennsylvania) is R&B, Soul, Funk, Pop artist. Born to an Italian mother and an African-American father in a Philadelphia suburb, Michael's mixed race heritage deeply influences his music[1]. A self-taught vocalist, Michael has memories of bursting into song as a child, ""My mom was so embarrassed to take me to the mall," he recalls with a laugh, "I would sing 'Me So Horny' at the top of my lungs!"[1] He received attention from Virgin Records while still a teenager, but ultimately signed with Atlantic Records and their Downtown Records imprint[2].
His first EP Ya Dig? was featured only on iTunes and the single "We All Want The Same Thing" was featured on iTunes Store as the Single of the Week for May 8, 2007.[citation needed] His single "We All Want The Same Thing" features rapper Lupe Fiasco and was featured in a Verizon Wireless V Cast Song ID commercial.[3]
Michael's current single, the reggae-influenced "It Don't Make Any Difference" featuring Wyclef Jean deals with the social issue of interracial love with personal lyrics:
"“All you gotta do is look at me/Three generations of my family you see/People treat you different/When you’re in between/He was black and she was white/You know that most people thought that it wasn’t right/I can still remember what she used to say/It don’t make any difference to me”[4].
MTV favorable reviewed his performance on day two of the August 2007 Lollapalooza concert in Chicago, describing Michael as a "young singer with the towering afro and a voice that mixes the soulful side of Michael Jackson with a hip-hop edge." [5] he has also performed at MTV's 2007 Video Music Awards at The Palms Casino Pool in Las Vegas [6]
"It Don't Make Any Difference" is also featured as part of EA Trax in EA Sports' NBA Live 08.
The debut album Kevin Michael was released on October 2, 2007 and he toured that fall as the opening act for Maroon 5[3].
"We All Want the Same Thing" appeared in Step Up 2 The Streets, but the song was not featured on the film's soundtrack.
His song "Weekend Jumpoff" was briefly featured in Season Three of the hit HBO series Entourage in episode 316 - Gotcha!, when Adrian Grenier's character Vinnie is in the bath tub with his agent, Amanda.
His songs "Philadelphia" and "Stone Cold Killa" are featured on DANCE! Online, a multiplayer online casual rhythm game.
