The group has recorded nine studio albums, beginning withCherry Peel, and their ninth, Skeletal Lamping, is due to be releasedon October 31, 2008 on Polyvinyl. While melodic pop has always beenBarnes' primary vehicle, his style has managed to transformsignificantly since the 1997 release of Cherry Peel. The acoustictendencies of early albums gradually transformed into a moreelectronic, funk, and overall eclectic sound. One of the features whichoften appears in Barnes' songwriting is his penchant for composingupbeat melodies to gloomy lyrics and morose subject matter. Atdifferent periods in the band's career he has dealt with subjects bothpersonal and fictional. He is a prolific lyricist with a tendency toemploy unusual words and phrases, as well as complicated worldplay.[/font]
